The AN/PVS-7B/D is an 18mm GEN II or GEN III single Tube Night Vision
goggle that was originally designed by Litton. A new designation of AN/PVS-7D
has been adopted by U.S. Armed Forces that incorporates an advanced GEN
III image tube with 64 lp/mm resolution. The goggle is intended for land use
including vehicle driving. It is worn on a head mount or helmet mount device.
When using the optional helmet mount the goggle will automatically shut off in
the up position. The goggle and its adaptor are independently removable from
the helmet strap.
The goggle is powered by two AA batteries inserted into the housing. When
the batteries become low a warning light is set off in the interior field-of-the-
view. The goggle has an exterior infrared light source to illuminate the nearby
scene so that the user may read maps, do night time repair or maintenance
work, or tend to injured personnel. The goggle may be used in conjunction
with a personal weapon equipped with a bore sighted infrared or visible aimlight/
pointer.
An "ON-OFF" knob controls all of the features of the goggle. The "reset" posi-
tion is the same as the "OFF". Its purpose is to remind the user that the system
must be reactivated after it was removed from its mount (doing so automati-
cally turns off the goggle).
Each eyepiece and the objective lens can be individually focused. These con-
trols can be operated while wearing artic mittens. The system is also compatible
while wearing a protective mask.
